To become a Canadian citizen, most applicants must
be a permanent resident
have lived in Canada for at least 3 out of the last 5 years (1,095 days)
have filed their taxes according to the requirements of the Income Tax Act
pass a citizenship test NOTE: Individuals that are 55 years of age or older are exempt from this process
prove their language skills in English or French: This process does not apply to applicants that are 55 years of age or older or minor children that are seeking citizenship
